A portable espresso machine is worth it if you drink espresso-based coffee most days somewhere without a café or kitchen, such as your desk, the car or a campsite. Once it's paid for, each cup costs less than café coffee. It isn't worth it if you want big milky drinks or have good coffee downstairs.
Already decided? Compare models in our best portable espresso machine guide. Hiblendr sells the Heypresso 2.0, so we've kept the trade-offs and the maths in plain view.

Key takeaways
- Worth it for regular espresso drinkers who are often away from a kitchen.
- Self-heating saves you the kettle, but heating takes a few minutes and most of the battery.
- Per-cup cost is lower than café coffee once you've paid for the machine. Our table shows the break-even in cups.
- Not worth it if you only drink big milky drinks or already have good coffee nearby.
Quick definitions
- Portable coffee machine: a handheld espresso maker you carry and brew with anywhere. Self-heating models (like Heypresso 2.0) heat their own water from a battery. Manual models need hot water and hand pumping.
- Espresso: a short, strong coffee made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee at high pressure (measured in bar). The golden foam on top is called crema. More terms in our espresso basics glossary.
- Capsule: a pre-filled, sealed coffee pod. Small (Nespresso Original-size) and large capsules are the two common formats.
Is a portable espresso machine worth it?
Yes, if you'll use it several times a week away from a kitchen or café. A self-heating machine like Heypresso 2.0 makes espresso from room-temperature water, and ground coffee costs less per cup than café drinks. Skip it if you mainly drink large lattes or only want coffee now and then.
| A portable espresso machine is worth it if you… | It's probably not worth it if you… |
|---|---|
| Drink espresso, americano or iced black coffee most days | Mainly drink large milky lattes (it doesn't froth milk) |
| Work at a desk, drive outstation, camp or travel often | Have a café or office machine you already like |
| Don't always have a kettle | Want several cups at once (80ml tank) |
| Are OK waiting a few minutes while it heats, or carry hot water | Want coffee in seconds with no prep |
What does a portable coffee machine actually do?
It brews espresso anywhere by pushing water through coffee at high pressure. Self-heating models heat water with a built-in battery, so you only need room-temperature water. Manual models are lighter and need no charging, but you pour in hot water and pump by hand. Both make one small drink at a time.
Self-heating portable espresso maker: fill the tank, add coffee, press a button. Heypresso 2.0 heats water to about 92°C and extracts at up to 20 bar.
Manual portable espresso maker: you add hot water and build pressure with a hand pump. For side-by-side specs of both types, see our best portable espresso machine comparison and Heypresso vs Wacaco vs Staresso.
How much does a portable espresso machine save vs café coffee?
Usually a lot, if you'd otherwise buy café coffee. Ground coffee or capsules cost a fraction of a café drink, so the machine's price is paid back after a number of cups. Divide the machine price by what you save per cup to find your break-even. Our table does this with prices checked on 27 October 2026.
| Item | Source (checked 27 Oct 2026) | Price | Per cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heypresso 2.0 | Hiblendr product page | RM429 (regular RM499) | One-off |
| Ground coffee, 16g double shot | Rengit Elephant Roastery Espresso Blend, 250g | RM30.00 / 250g | RM1.92 (RM30 × 16 ÷ 250) |
| Small (Nespresso Original-size) capsule | Nespresso Malaysia, Ispirazione Arpeggio | RM2.75 per capsule (sold in sleeves of 10) | RM2.75 |
| Café americano | DeMi Coffee menu | RM5.90 | RM5.90 |
| Café double espresso | Dunkin' Malaysia hot coffee menu | RM8.30 | RM8.30 |
Break-even, in cups (RM429 ÷ the saving per cup):
| If you'd otherwise buy… | Saving per cup with ground coffee | Break-even (ground) | Saving per cup with capsules | Break-even (capsules) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeMi americano (RM5.90) | RM3.98 | about 108 cups | RM3.15 | about 137 cups |
| Dunkin' double espresso (RM8.30) | RM6.38 | about 68 cups | RM5.55 | about 78 cups |
So if you replace one RM5.90 café americano with a home-ground double shot five working days a week, 108 cups is about 22 weeks. These figures leave out water, sugar, milk, charging and your time, and café prices vary by outlet, so treat them as a guide.
What are the downsides of a portable coffee machine?
Heating water from cold takes a few minutes; Heypresso 2.0 takes about 300 seconds to reach about 92°C. Heating also uses most of the battery, so you'll brew far more coffees per charge with pre-heated water. The 80ml tank makes one drink at a time, and you'll need to flush it after each use.
- Heat-up time: about 300 seconds on Heypresso 2.0. Some rivals are quicker: the OutIn Mino states 149 seconds for 50ml to 93.3°C, and the OutIn Nano about 200 seconds. Pour in hot water and you skip most of the wait.
- Battery: Heypresso 2.0 gives 3–5 shots per charge when it heats and extracts (depending on water volume and temperature), and up to 50 when you add hot water so it only extracts. Its 7500mAh battery recharges by USB-C.
- Small tank: 80ml, so it's one drink at a time.
- Weight: 680g. Bag-friendly, not pocket-sized.
- Cleaning: press the brew button without coffee after each use to flush it out, rinse the tank and capsule holder, and keep the motor dry.
- Milk: no portable machine steams milk. For lattes, see how to make a latte with a portable espresso machine.

Ground coffee or capsules: which is cheaper per cup?
Ground coffee is usually cheaper per cup than capsules: in our table, a 16g double shot costs RM1.92 against RM2.75 for a capsule. Capsules are quicker and cleaner on the go. Heypresso 2.0 takes ground coffee, small capsules and large capsules, so you can mix both. Work out your own cost from the bag or box price.

Portable machine vs office capsule machine vs kopi or instant
A portable machine wins on where you can use it; a countertop capsule machine on speed; kopi or instant on price.
| Portable espresso machine | Countertop capsule machine | Kopi / instant sachet | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | Anywhere | Home or office, plugged in | Anywhere with hot water |
| Needs | Charged battery; water (room temp or hot) | Mains power | Hot water |
| Drink | Espresso shot (80ml tank) | Espresso or lungo | Sweetened or black coffee |
| Speed | Minutes to heat from cold; faster with hot water | Fast once warm | Fast |

Who should buy one (and who shouldn't)?
- Desk worker in KL or the Klang Valley: a daily café habit adds up fast. Skip it if a café you like is a minute away.
- Outstation driver: self-heating means no kettle needed at the R&R. Skip it if you'd rather stop for kopi anyway.
- Camper or hiker: real espresso at the campsite. Skip it if every gram counts; a manual press is lighter.
- Frequent traveller: hotel coffee is often poor. Skip it if good coffee is easy to find where you stay.
- Student in a hostel: no kitchen needed. Skip it if the price is a stretch; kopi sachets cost far less.
- Parent on the school run: brew in the car while you wait. Skip it if you only drink coffee on weekends.

Can you take a portable coffee machine on a plane?
Usually in your hand luggage, because portable espresso machines contain lithium batteries. Hiblendr recommends packing Heypresso 2.0 in your carry-on and checking with your airline before you fly, as rules and staff decisions vary. Empty the water tank first, and pack your coffee or capsules separately.
The Heypresso Protective Case (RM89, regular RM99) keeps the machine and capsules together in your bag.
Heypresso 2.0: what you get for RM429
Heypresso 2.0 costs RM429 (regular RM499) in Pearl White or Charcoal Black. It self-heats water to about 92°C in about 300 seconds, extracts at up to 20 bar, and has a 16g basket for a proper double shot. The 80ml tank has a temperature indicator and an extraction timer. It takes ground coffee, small capsules and large capsules, runs on a 7500mAh battery with USB-C charging, weighs 680g, and is made with BPA-free materials and anti-dry-burn protection.

What we'd tell a friend: it's the easy pick if you want one machine that brews from cold water and takes both ground coffee and capsules, at RM429 against RM699 for the OutIn Nano. To be fair to rivals: the OutIn Mino heats faster (RM899 at OutIn Malaysia, RM819 at Storming Gravity), the Wacaco Pixapresso has a bigger 120ml tank, and the manual Wacaco Nanopresso costs less (from RM359 at Storming Gravity) but needs hot water every time.
Useful add-ons: the Heypresso Coffee Stand (RM59, regular RM79), the Protective Case (RM89), the Heypresso Coffee Recipe E-Book (RM29.90) and the All-Day Energy Bundle (Heypresso 2.0 with a HiSip bottle for cold drinks, from RM499). Frequently asked questions
How long does a portable espresso machine take to make coffee?
From room-temperature water, Heypresso 2.0 heats to about 92°C in about 300 seconds, then brews. Pouring in hot water skips most of that wait and saves battery. Manual machines brew as soon as you add hot water and pump.
How many coffees can I make on one charge?
It depends mostly on whether the machine heats the water. Heypresso 2.0 makes 3–5 shots per charge when it heats and extracts (depending on water volume and temperature), and up to 50 when you add hot water so it only extracts. Charge it by USB-C like your phone.
Does a portable espresso machine make real espresso?
Yes. Self-heating machines like Heypresso 2.0 brew at up to 20 bar of pressure with water at about 92°C, which gives a short coffee with crema. Taste still depends on your coffee, grind and dose. A fresh, fine espresso grind and a full 16g basket work best.
Can I make a latte with a portable coffee machine?
Yes, but you froth the milk separately, because portable machines don't steam milk. Brew a double shot, then add cold or warmed milk, or pour it over ice. Our guide on how to make a latte with a portable espresso machine walks you through it step by step.
Is Heypresso 2.0 worth the price?
At RM429 (checked 27 October 2026) it heats its own water, takes ground coffee and both capsule sizes, and charges by USB-C. If you'd rather carry hot water and pump by hand, a manual press costs less. Compare every option in our best portable espresso machine guide.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Hiblendr offers 0% interest instalments over 3–4 months with Atome or Grab on Heypresso 2.0, according to the product page FAQ (checked 27 October 2026).
How we worked out the numbers
We opened every price on 27 October 2026 (Malaysia time). Ground coffee cost per cup = bag price × 16g ÷ 250g. Break-even cups = RM429 ÷ (café price − home cost per cup), rounded up. We didn't include milk, sugar, water, electricity or battery wear. Prices change, so check the linked pages before you buy.
