General guidance from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, not medical advice.
Malaysia's Ministry of Health (MOH, or KKM) recommends six to eight glasses of plain water a day, which is 1.5 to 2 litres, for healthy adults. That's two more glasses on days you exercise or spend time in the heat. Berapa gelas air sehari? MOH says 6-8 gelas. Below: litres, bottle refills, fasting, outdoor activity, warning signs and the upper limit, all from MOH's Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2020 and health materials.
Three terms used in this guide
- Glass: 250ml, the measure MOH uses in its guidance.
- Plain water: air kosong, with no sugar added.
- Dehydration: losing more fluid than you take in.
How much water should you drink a day in Malaysia?
Malaysia's Ministry of Health recommends six to eight glasses of plain water a day, which is 1.5 to 2 litres, for healthy adults. Drink two more glasses when you're physically active or in hot, humid weather. Spread it through the day, with a glass or two at and between meals, even if you're not thirsty.
In MOH's words, from Key Message 12 of the Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2020: Drink six to eight glasses (1.5-2.0 liter) of plain water daily.
The guidelines explain why this matters here: Malaysia stays between 23°C and 33°C all year, with average humidity of 60 to 80%, so our weather feels hotter and we sweat more than the thermometer suggests.
How many glasses is 2 litres?
Two litres is eight glasses, because the Ministry of Health counts one glass as 250ml. Six glasses make 1.5 litres, the lower end of its daily recommendation. In bottles, 2 litres is four 500ml bottles of mineral water, about two and a half fills of a 770ml bottle, or one fill of a 2L jug.
Quick conversion: 4 glasses = 1 litre, 6 glasses = 1.5 litres, 8 glasses = 2 litres, 10 glasses = 2.5 litres.
How much water do you need by situation
Start from the Ministry of Health's six to eight glasses a day and adjust for what you're doing. Add two glasses when you're active or in the heat, spread intake across sahur and the night when fasting, and never push past about 800ml an hour. One glass is 250ml.
| Situation | MOH guidance | In litres (1 glass = 250ml) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal day (healthy adult) | 6-8 glasses of plain water | 1.5-2.0L | MDG 2020, Key Message 12 |
| With meals | 1-2 glasses during and between main meals | 250-500ml per meal | MDG 2020, Key Message 12 |

| Exercise or hot, humid weather | 2 additional glasses | +500ml, so 2.0-2.5L in total | MDG 2020; MOH poster (2019) |
| Fasting | 2 glasses at sahur, 2 at iftar, 2-4 through the night | 1.5-2.0L | MDG 2020, Key Message 12 |
| 24 hours before outdoor activity in hot weather | At least 8 glasses | 2.0L | Buku Gelombang Haba (KKM) |
| 15-20 minutes before outdoor activity in hot weather | 1-2 glasses | 200-300ml | Buku Gelombang Haba (KKM) |
| During strenuous activity under 1 hour (hot-weather guidance) | 1-2 glasses every 15-20 minutes | — | Buku Gelombang Haba (KKM) |
| Upper limit | More than 800ml per hour is not recommended | About 0.8L per hour at most | MDG 2020, Key Message 12 |

When it's hot or you're exercising
Yes. The Ministry of Health advises two additional glasses of plain water, about 500ml, when you're physically active or in hot, humid conditions, on top of the usual six to eight. Malaysia stays around 23-33°C with 60-80% humidity, so you lose fluid through sweat even when you're not exercising.
When you're fasting
The Ministry of Health suggests two glasses of plain water at sahur, two glasses when breaking fast and another two to four glasses through the night. That reaches the same six to eight glasses a day within the hours you can drink. Sip steadily after iftar rather than drinking it all at once.
Outdoor activity during a heatwave
For exercise or outdoor work in hot weather, MOH's Buku Gelombang Haba says: at least eight glasses in the 24 hours before, one to two glasses (200-300ml) 15 to 20 minutes before you start, then one to two glasses every 15 to 20 minutes during strenuous activity of under an hour.

What are the signs of dehydration?
The Ministry of Health lists extreme thirst, passing less urine, muscle cramps, headache, a dry mouth and tiredness as signs you're not drinking enough. If you notice them in the heat, stop what you're doing, rest somewhere cool and drink water. Get medical help if symptoms are severe or don't improve.
The signs on MOH's Simptom Dehidrasi poster:
- Extreme thirst (rasa dahaga yang melampau)
- Passing less urine (kurang membuang air kecil)
- Muscle cramps (kekejangan)
- Headache (sakit kepala)
- Dry mouth (mulut kering)
- Tiredness (keletihan)
If you have heat-illness symptoms, stop, rest in the shade and drink water; seek medical help if they don't improve.
Can you drink too much water?
Yes, though it's uncommon. Malaysia's dietary guidelines say drinking more than 800ml an hour is not recommended, because it may increase the risk of low blood sodium (dilutional hyponatraemia). Sip through the day instead of downing litres at once, and people told by a doctor to limit fluids, such as some heart or kidney patients, should follow that advice.
Do other drinks and foods count?
Food and other drinks add fluid, and the Ministry of Health says to keep getting fluid from foods such as soup, fruit and low-sugar juice. But plain water should make up your six to eight glasses. In hot weather, MOH also advises avoiding caffeinated, alcoholic and sugary drinks, so reach for plain water first.
The Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2020 put it as "maintain fluid intake from other food sources", and MOH's poster names soup, fruit and juice that's low in sugar and fat. Blending fruit? Our smoothie recipes add fruit, but don't replace plain water.
How many bottle refills is 2 litres?
It depends on your bottle. A 500ml bottle needs four fills to reach 2 litres, a 770ml HiSip about two and a half, and a 2L HiJug Max one. On gym or hot days, add 500ml: that's about three HiSip fills. A bottle that keeps water cold makes refills easier to finish.
| Bottle | Capacity | Fills for 1.5L | Fills for 2.0L | Fills for 2.5L (active or hot day) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical mineral water bottle | 500ml | 3 | 4 | 5 | Single-use plastic; warms up quickly once it's out of the fridge |
| HiSip insulated water bottle | 770ml | About 2 | About 2.5 | About 3.25 | Double-wall vacuum-insulated 18/8 stainless steel, cold for up to 24 hours (Hiblendr-stated), one-push spout with straw. RM129.90 |
| HiSip 1L (limited edition: Vanilla Sand, Navy Breeze) | 1L | 1.5 | 2 | 2.5 | RM139.90 |

Our top pick for reaching your daily target is the HiSip insulated water bottle. At 770ml it's light enough to carry all day (395g), and its one-push spout with a straw lets you sip upright without unscrewing a cap. Hiblendr states it keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours, which helps in Malaysian heat. Its lid parts are dishwasher-safe; hand-wash the bottle itself. "Since I started using it, I'm consistently hitting (and often exceeding) my 2-litre daily goal without it feeling like a chore." Myie Ho, HiSip review on hiblendr.com.my

Prefer one big fill? The HiJug Max 2L holds your whole 2 litres at once, and doubles as a blender jug if you already own Juice Cup Ultra. Its insulation isn't stated, so it's best for indoor days near the fridge.

6 simple ways to drink enough water every day
- Have a glass with each meal. MOH suggests one to two glasses during and between main meals.
- Keep a bottle in sight. On your desk or car cup holder, not in your bag.
- Refill at set times. For example, when you arrive at work, at lunch and mid-afternoon.
- Use a straw or one-push spout. You can sip without unscrewing a cap or stopping what you're doing.
- Carry cold water outdoors. An insulated bottle keeps it cool between refills.
- Add two glasses on gym or hot days. That's MOH's extra 500ml.
HiSip owners say the spout helps:
"I used to remind myself to drink water and still forget. With this bottle, I just sip without thinking." Amirah Zuhairah, HiSip review on hiblendr.com.my

Want a blender too? The Drink Better Daily bundle pairs a Juice Cup Ultra portable blender with a HiSip bottle: RM399 with a 770ml bottle or RM409 with a 1L bottle (22 October 2026).
Frequently asked questions
Is 2 litres of water a day enough?
For most healthy adults, yes. Two litres is the top of the Ministry of Health's six-to-eight-glass recommendation. On days you exercise or spend time in the heat, MOH suggests two extra glasses, so about 2.5 litres. Children, pregnant women and people with medical conditions should follow advice for their situation.
Should I drink water even when I'm not thirsty?
Yes. The Ministry of Health advises drinking plain water at all times, even when you're not thirsty, and in hot weather not to wait until you feel thirsty. In an air-conditioned office it's easy to forget to drink at all, so keep water within reach and sip through the day.
Is it better to drink cold water in hot weather?
The Ministry of Health's guidance focuses on how much plain water you drink, not its temperature, so drink it the way you'll actually finish it. Many people find cool water easier to keep sipping in Malaysian heat, which is why an insulated bottle that keeps water cold for hours can help you reach your daily target.
How can I remember to drink more water?
Tie drinking to habits: a glass with each meal, as MOH suggests, and refills at set times such as arrival at work, lunch and mid-afternoon. Keep a bottle in sight on your desk, and use one with a straw or one-push spout so you can sip without stopping what you're doing.
How long does HiSip keep water cold?
Hiblendr states that the 770ml HiSip keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours, thanks to its double-wall vacuum-insulated 18/8 stainless steel body. Real results depend on the starting temperature, ice and how often you open it. One reviewer says water stayed cold after hours outside, and Hiblendr designs HiSip for cold drinks only.
Is HiSip or HiJug Max better for drinking 2 litres?
HiSip (770ml) is insulated, keeps water cold and fits a car cup holder or bag, but you'll refill it about two and a half times. HiJug Max holds the full 2 litres in one fill and doubles as a blender jug on a Juice Cup Ultra base, but its insulation isn't stated. Choose by refills versus cold water.
Should people with heart or kidney problems drink 2 litres?
Not without checking with their doctor. The Ministry of Health's heatwave guidance notes that some patients, such as those with heart failure, advanced kidney disease or on dialysis, are told to limit fluids and should follow their doctor's advice. This article gives general guidance for healthy adults and isn't medical advice.
How much water should I drink before and during outdoor activity?
In hot weather, the Ministry of Health's heatwave booklet suggests at least eight glasses in the 24 hours before, then one to two glasses (200-300ml) 15 to 20 minutes before you start. During strenuous activity under an hour, drink one to two glasses every 15 to 20 minutes, without going over 800ml an hour.
