You can make smoothies, protein shakes, frozen-fruit drinks and iced coffee in a portable blender, as long as there is enough liquid. Here are 15 portable smoothie recipes measured in ml and grams for one 500ml cup, with Malaysian fruit where it fits. Each is a wireless smoothie recipe you can blend at home, at work or at the gym. Hiblendr makes the Juice Cup Ultra portable blender; we measured every recipe for its cup.

Key takeaways

  • Liquid goes in first; ice and frozen fruit go in last.
  • Keep the total to about 400–450ml in a 500ml cup, so there is headroom for the blend to move.
  • Cut fruit and frozen pieces small, about 2cm.
  • Rinse the cup and blades under the tap afterwards. The Juice Cup Ultra is IPX6, so never soak it.

Three terms used here

  • Portable blender: a cordless, USB-C rechargeable blender you can drink from.
  • IPX6: protected against powerful water jets; not rated for soaking or submersion.
  • Frozen fruit chunks: pre-cut fruit frozen in small pieces, which you can use instead of ice.

What can you make in a portable blender?

Smoothies, protein shakes, frozen-fruit drinks, iced coffee and light sauces, as long as there's enough liquid. A 500ml portable blender like the Juice Cup Ultra handles soft and frozen fruit, milk, yogurt, powders and small ice pieces. It isn't for dry grinding, nut butter or hot liquids. Keep recipes to one serving and blend liquid first.

Why portable-blender recipes are different (500ml cup rules)

Most recipes online are written for a 1.5L jug. A compact smoothie recipe for a small blender needs smaller amounts and a stricter order.

How much should you put in a 500ml portable blender?

Keep the total to about 400–450ml so the ingredients can move around the blades. Start with 150–250ml of liquid, then soft fruit, then a small handful of frozen pieces or ice. If it stops turning, open it, add a splash of liquid, shake and blend again. The Juice Cup Ultra has measurement markings to help.

What order should you add smoothie ingredients?

Liquid goes in first, then powders like protein or cocoa, then yogurt and soft fruit, then greens, and frozen fruit or ice last. This order lets the blades catch liquid straight away, so powders don't clump at the bottom and ice doesn't jam. Cut fruit into small pieces, roughly 2cm, before it goes in.

  1. Liquid (milk, coconut water, juice, water)
  2. Powders (protein, cocoa, spirulina)
  3. Yogurt and soft add-ins
  4. Fresh fruit
  5. Greens
  6. Seeds or soaked oats, in small amounts
  7. Small frozen pieces or ice, last

Hiblendr's ice advice: cover the contents with enough liquid (water or milk), and keep ice or frozen fruit pieces small.

How many fruit and vegetable servings is a smoothie?

It can help. Malaysia's Ministry of Health dietary guidelines (2020) recommend 2 servings of fruit and at least 3 servings of vegetables a day. A smoothie with fruit and a handful of spinach covers part of that, but whole fruit and vegetables still matter for fibre and variety. Treat smoothies as a top-up, not a replacement.

Making a bigger batch: HiJug Max 2L

Not in one 500ml cup; it's built for one serving. For two or more, the HiJug Max 2L jug is a 2L Tritan jug that fits the Juice Cup Ultra base (base sold separately), so you can blend a bigger batch and pour into glasses. Drink smoothies fresh; they separate and lose colour if left for hours.

To scale a recipe, multiply it by the number of people and keep the same order. Swap the lid back and it's a leak-proof 2L water jug for the rest of the day.

How to clean your portable blender after a smoothie

Blend warm water with a drop of dish soap, pour it out, then rinse the cup and blades under running water. The Juice Cup Ultra is IPX6 water resistant, so rinse it but never soak or submerge it. Clean within about 30 minutes so fruit doesn't stain, and let the cup dry open before closing.

Juice Cup Ultra shortcut: add water and a drop of soap, then double-press the button. Keep the USB-C port dry before charging. Won't start? Check the lid is locked (BlendSafe), and see how to use your Juice Cup Ultra.

Frequently asked questions

Can a portable blender crush ice and frozen fruit?

Yes, with enough liquid and small pieces. Hiblendr's guidance for the Juice Cup Ultra is to cover ice or frozen fruit with water or milk and keep pieces small. Ice and frozen fruit use more battery than soft fruit, so expect fewer blends per charge on icy recipes.

Can I make juice in a portable blender?

You can blend whole-fruit "juice" with water, such as watermelon or orange segments, but it keeps the pulp and fibre. A portable blender doesn't separate juice from pulp like a juicer. Strain it through a fine sieve if you want it clear.

Can I take a protein shake for breakfast?

Many people do, often blended with fruit and oats so it's more filling. A shake of milk, one scoop of protein powder, half a banana and soaked oats takes about two minutes in a portable blender. Check the serving size on your protein powder, and talk to a doctor or dietitian if you have specific health needs.

How long can I keep a smoothie after blending?

Best within about 30 minutes. Smoothies separate and fruit browns as they sit. If you're taking one to the office, blend just before you leave, keep it cold, and shake it before drinking. Wash the cup soon after so it doesn't stain or smell.

Is the Juice Cup Ultra waterproof?

No. It's rated IPX6, which means it's protected against powerful water jets, so you can rinse the whole blender under running water. It isn't rated for soaking or submersion, so never leave it sitting in a sink of water. Keep the charging port dry before charging.

How many smoothies can I make on one charge?

The Juice Cup Ultra is rated for up to 20 blends per full charge from its 2 × 2000mAh battery, and a full charge takes about 2–2.5 hours by USB-C. Ice and frozen fruit use more power, so icy recipes give fewer blends.

Can I put hot ingredients in a portable blender?

No. Let anything hot cool down to room temperature first. Blending hot liquid in a sealed cup can build pressure and push hot liquid out when you open the lid, which can scald you. For coffee smoothies, use cooled coffee or pour a fresh shot over ice before blending.

Start with the mangga susu or the banana oat smoothie this week, then try the others as your fruit bowl changes. Browse all our portable blenders if you're shopping for one. Happy blending.
